Responsibilities

Design, delivery and evolution of secure, scalable Ruby on Rails applications and services
Setting technical direction for major projects and platform initiatives from solution design through implementation and production ownership
Development and evolution of web applications and services with focus on scalability, maintainability, reliability and long-term platform health
Identification of systemic pain points across services and proposal of pragmatic architectural improvements
Partnership with Product, QA, Security and other engineering leaders to shape technical roadmaps and ensure compliance
Pioneering and enabling responsible use of AI in engineering workflows
Championing code quality through code reviews, automated testing, documentation and continuous improvement of engineering practices
Mentoring engineers at all levels and sharing knowledge broadly
Continuous evaluation and piloting of new tools and technologies including AI toolchains

Requirements

8+ years of professional software engineering experience in a commercial software environment
Expert-level understanding of Ruby on Rails with a strong track record delivering production-grade backend or full-stack applications at scale
Extensive experience with API and web development including RESTful service design
Proven ability to design and review scalable, high-performance system architectures, APIs and data models
Experience designing secure software in environments embracing DevOps, infrastructure as code and automated delivery practices
Deep understanding of microservices or service-oriented architectures and trade-offs in distributed systems
Practical understanding of AI model capabilities, prompt engineering and responsible/safe AI use
Strong experience with source control systems such as Git and GitHub with collaborative and branching workflows at scale
Excellent communication skills with ability to influence technical direction and lead cross-functional initiatives
Proven ability to mentor engineers, set engineering standards and break down large initiatives into executable work
Strong knowledge of SQL and data modeling with ability to reason about application performance and capacity planning at scale
Experience working with AWS-based systems, serverless architectures and modern cloud deployment and migration patterns
