Responsibilities

Maintenance of existing Android application with focus on stability, reliability, and production readiness
Investigation, prioritization, and fixing of critical and high-impact bugs
Provision of timely fixes to unblock scheduled releases
Keeping Android SDK, Gradle, and third-party libraries up to date
Proactive monitoring of Android platform changes, upcoming deprecations, Java/Kotlin tech stack, and breaking changes in key dependencies
Preparation of mitigation strategies to avoid last-minute upgrade risks
Ensuring no long-term dependency or platform drift
Support of approximately two major releases per year
Ensuring build stability, compatibility with target Android versions, and adequate test coverage before releases
Participation in release readiness checks and post-release follow-ups
Design, maintenance, and improvement of CI pipelines for the Android project
Ensuring CI supports reliable builds, automated testing, and release-ready artifacts
Troubleshooting build and pipeline issues independently
Implementation and maintenance of UI automation tests (e.g. Espresso or equivalent)
Integration of UI tests into CI using the company’s device farm
Ensuring coverage across relevant Android versions and device profiles
Maintenance of test stability and minimization of flaky tests
Identification of opportunities to simplify architecture, reduce unnecessary complexity, improve long-term maintainability, and documentation
Suggestion of pragmatic improvements rather than large rewrites
Clear communication of trade-offs, risks, and expected benefits

Requirements

Strong experience with Android native application development
Proficiency in Kotlin (Java acceptable where applicable)
Solid understanding of Android lifecycle, app architecture, performance and stability considerations
Proven experience maintaining production Android applications
Experience with dependency upgrades, SDK version alignment, and handling deprecations responsibly
Experience setting up and maintaining CI pipelines for Android projects
Familiarity with Gradle build system and automated test execution in CI
Hands-on experience with UI automation testing
Experience using device farms (internal or external)

Nice-to-have

Experience with modular Android projects
Experience with static analysis or quality gates
Familiarity with Play Store release processes
Familiarity with crash reporting and monitoring tools
